  ESOL Endorsement Quick Fact Sheet

ESOL 1: A Beginning for All Educators Quick Look       Preview

Learn to meet the educational needs of students for whom English is not their native language. This course provides an overview of the training needed to meet LEP students' needs and is one of three introductory courses applicable for all educators. Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (20 credit hours)

ESOL 2: Curriculum and Methods Quick Look       Preview

Identify and explore various content-area strategies for use with Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. Use these strategies to critique a classroom instructional plan. This is part of Beacon's ESOL introductory series for all educators. Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (20 credit hours)

ESOL 3: Language and Diversity Quick Look       Preview

Explore language acquisition processes and implications for meeting the educational needs of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. This course is part of Beacon's ESOL introductory series for all educators. Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (20 credit hours)

ESOL 4: Cultural Diversity Quick Look       Preview

Gain awareness of various cultures to promote intercultural communication and enhance instruction and learning for diverse populations. Learn about cultural orientations of various groups and use your knowledge to enhance instruction for LEP and other students. This course is part of Beacon's ESOL program for Category 1 teachers. Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (30 credit hours)

ESOL 5: Applied Linguistics, Part A Quick Look       Preview

Explore concepts and principles of applied linguistics such as phonology, principles of English, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and second language acquisition. Identify how these concepts and principles relate to English language learners (ELLs). Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (30 credit hours)

ESOL 5: Applied Linguistics, Part B Quick Look       Preview

Examine and learn to identify second language delivery models, instructional methods and approaches, and instructional strategies, as well as methods on incorporating the student’s first language into second language literacy development. Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (30 credit hours)

ESOL 6: Assessment Quick Look       Preview

Identify factors that affect assessment of ELL students including linguistic bias, test adaptations and accommodations. Additionally, explore statewide assessment policies and interpretation of assessment data. Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (30 credit hours)

ESOL 7: Differentiated Instruction, Part A Quick Look       Preview

Learn the principles of differentiated instruction and how they apply to ELL students. Additionally, learn to determine stages of language, reading, and cognitive development as it pertains to identifying the differing needs of students in the classroom. Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (30 credit hours)

ESOL 7: Differentiated Instruction, Part B Quick Look       Preview

Apply principles of differentiated instruction. Explore methods and strategies for identifying the needs of individual students who are in the process of acquiring English. Then, learn about differentiating content, process, and/or product in order to address and accommodate the different needs of students. Check with your district staff development office for credit eligibility toward Florida's ESOL Endorsement. (30 credit hours)

ESOL 8: Supervised Practicum Quick Look       Preview

Review aspects of the various areas for ESOL coursework as determined by the Consent Decree and in compliance with Florida Performance Standards for Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages in preparation for implementing the supervised practicum. Then, apply knowledge of ESOL appropriate instructional practices, while creating and implementing instructional plans. This course provides guidelines and direction for completion of the supervised practicum. See course prerequisites.
