Beacon Reading Courses
Discover the latest news and research about how kids learn to read. Beacon provides programs of courses for endorsement, CAR-PD, and content-area reading.

Explore the five core areas identified by the National Reading Panel: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Included in each of the interactive online courses in this series are both instructional components and application activities. Content aligns to the indicators for Florida's K-12 Reading Endorsement.

Gain substantive knowledge of language structure, cognition, assessment, and differentiated instruction for each of the components: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Educators with Florida's ESOL Endorsement or Certification may qualify to add Reading Endorsement using the REESOL option. Content aligns to Florida's ESOL-to-Reading Crosswalk.

Discover the principles of scientifically-based reading research and learn the benefits of systematic, explicit teaching methods. Create and implement lesson plans in the classrooom to demonstrate mastery of content-area vocabulary and comprehension. Beacon offers two of the three components for Florida’s CAR-PD program: Competency 2 and the practicum. Participants complete the CAR-PD Academy through their districts.

Implement reading strategies—as well as reasoning and writing instruction—that give students the tools they need to comprehend text in your content area. Courses are specifically designed to enhance the ability of content-area teachers to deliver reading instruction.
