Course Description
Learn to build relationships with parents in order to enhance students' academic growth. A variety of techniques to increase parent involvement are explored. To increase communication with parents, a classroom Website is created.

Course Objectives
Participant- Demonstrates an understanding of the basic concepts of parent/family involvement and the research associated with its effect on student achievement.
- Identifies the types of parent involvement.
- Demonstrates an understanding of Title I Parent Involvement Requirements in No Child Left Behind.
- Identifies the different sub-groups of parents.
- Identifies the barriers parents/families face in becoming involved with the student’s education.
- Identifies strategies to remove barriers to parent/family relationships with the school.
- Identifies critical issues associated with working with parents from poverty and strategies to improve parent-teacher relationships.
- Identifies strategies to create positive school environments that welcome parents and families.
- Develops a communications tool using technology to communicate and collaborate with parents, families, and the larger community in order to enhance the parent/teacher relationship and nurture student learning.
Course Timeline
The content for this 12-hour course is accessible through the Table of Contents. Anticipate spending two hours per week of online and offline activities that include reading course content, completing course documentation, and visiting suggested Websites. Additionally, plan to spend about six hours creating the classroom Website.
The course is scheduled for three weeks, with a typical pace being one session per week. However, participants may progress at a faster pace if desired. Participants are encouraged to complete sessions in a timely manner to avoid losing access before completion.

Course Technical Requirements
Participants must have accessibility to a(n):
- Computer (either PC or MAC)
- Internet connection
- Internet Explorer 6.x or Netscape Communicator 6.2 or higher Web browser
- Cookies must be turned on the Web browser
- Program capable of reading Word documents
- Up-to-date anti-virus software package
If you are using a pix, proxy, or caching server, it will be your responsibility to contact your network administrator to resolve any issues that these may cause.
Participants must possess:
- An understanding of the computer's operating system and software
- The ability to access the Internet and knowledge of Internet search techniques
- The ability to download and install files from the Internet
- A familiarity with email capabilities
During this course additional software or plug-ins may be needed to fully experience all of the media (audio, video, etc.) found on the Internet. You may download all of these plug-ins beforehand, or you can download them individually when prompted by the specific Website. A brief description of the plug-in and its URL are given below.

Adobe Acrobat Reader allows users to view and print Adobe PDF files on all major platforms.
- Macromedia Flash
Macromedia Flash Player allows users to experience the interactive Flash audio and video content on the Web.
- QuickTime Player
The QuickTime Player offers Apple's complete technology for handling video, sound, animation, graphics, text, and music.
- RealOne Player
The free RealOne Player allows users to experience streaming Real audio and video content on the Web.
Course Documentation Methods
In order to complete this course, participants must submit the following documentation. These exercises, accessible through the Course Log, must meet the established criteria.- Multiple Choice Quiz (1) – Participants demonstrate their knowledge by completing a multiple choice quiz.
- Reflection/Dialogue Exercises (2) – Participants reflect on course content, strategy implementation, and their personal learning experience.
- Website Creation (1) – Participants create a classroom Website.
