Facilitation Options: Beacon or Local

All Beacon online courses are delivered through the Beacon Course System. Through this system, participants have access to the Beacon online courses. These courses contain summative assessments, found in the Course Log, which are reviewed by a course facilitator.

The role of the facilitator is to comment on and assess the Course Log exercises. These comments provide guidance and clarity for those participants who may need additional assistance in grasping the course concepts. In addition to evaluating the Course Log exercises, facilitators also provide minor technical support for participants. For this reason, successful online course facilitators share three important qualities: content knowledge, communication skills, and computer literacy.

Beacon Facilitator Training

All facilitator training occurs online and is provided through Beacon. Each potential facilitator is required to take our "online facilitator training course", The Path to Successful Online Facilitation. This ten hour course is designed to introduce the facilitator to the Beacon Course System, as well as to online facilitation. Facilitators are also required to take the course(s) that he or she will facilitate to guarantee first-hand knowledge of the course.

Beacon Educator provides two facilitation options for your district:

Beacon-Facilitated

  • Beacon selects the potential facilitator.
  • The facilitator takes the course(s) to be facilitated.
  • The facilitator takes "online facilitator training course".
  • Beacon assigns the facilitator to the course sections.
  • Beacon provides access to course content, assessment criteria, and facilitation tools.
  • Beacon pays the facilitator.

Local-Facilitated

  • The district selects the potential facilitator.
  • The facilitator takes the course(s) to be facilitated.
  • The facilitator takes The Path to Successful Online Facilitation.
  • The district assigns the facilitator to the course sections.
  • Beacon provides access to course content, assessment criteria, and facilitation tools.
  • The local district pays the facilitator.
