Description

Explore the learning challenges experienced by students with dyslexia and other reading disorders. Demonstrate an understanding of how to use relevant assessment data to identify how to design and implement explicit, systematic and sequential reading instruction including multisensory intervention strategies based on student needs in the reading components.

This module meets Florida's professional learning requirements for Students with Disabilities (SWD) and the reading instruction requirement for certain certificate renewals.  Check with your district before taking this to meet the reading requirement.

NOTE: This extended module includes a quiz for each of the five chapters.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the characteristics of dyslexia and other reading disorders.
  • Recognize the effect instruction has on brain development.
  • Understand the importance of early detection of reading difficulties.
  • Identify how to develop explicit, systematic, and sequential reading instruction to meet the needs of struggling readers.
  • Recognize the significance of phonological awareness in learning to read.
  • Recognize universal screeners, diagnostic, and progress monitoring assessments.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to use MTSS to provide appropriate instruction and intervention to struggling readers.
  • Understand how word-level reading and language comprehension impact reading comprehension.
  • Recognize the characteristics of Structured Literacy instruction.
  • Recognize the word-reading (decoding) elements of Structured Literacy instruction including phonology, sound-symbol associations, and syllable structures.
  • Identify how to implement multisensory intervention strategies to support reading development.
  • Recognize the language comprehension elements of Structured Literacy instruction—morphology, semantics, and syntax.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to use assessment data to design appropriate interventions for struggling readers.

Participants must document their learning by completing the following summative.

5 Multiple Choice Exams - Learner demonstrates knowledge of content by selecting the correct answer from the choices provided.

The summative must meet 80% of the established criteria.
