Description
Examine the causes and characteristics of dyscalculia and its comorbidity with other specific learning disorders. Recognize the importance of early detection and intervention for students with the characteristics of dyscalculia. Use the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework to support students with dyscalculia and facilitate foundational math skills in all students. This module addresses Florida's professional learning requirements from SB 1108 - Students with Disabilities (SWD).
Learning Objectives
- Identify the four categories of specific learning disabilities (SLD) and explain their commonality.
- Compare and contrast two types of dyscalculia.
- Identify myths and misconceptions regarding students with dyscalculia.
- Differentiate between the causes and effects of dyscalculia and math anxiety.
- Categorize the four areas of math that are identified by assessment data as common deficits for students with characteristics of dyscalculia.
- Identify and explain the legal requirements for educating students with characteristics of dyscalculia under HB 7039-03.
- Explain the importance of early detection of student difficulties in mathematics.
- Recognize how data from statewide, standardized math assessments can screen students for substantial math deficiencies and students with characteristics of dyscalculia.
- Share the importance and outcomes of student assessment data with the student and the student’s parent(s) or caregiver(s) and relevant school-based personnel.
- Differentiate between the requirements for Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework and explain how the MTSS process supports students with characteristics of dyscalculia.
- Identify two frameworks of Tier 1 instructional strategies (differentiated instruction and Universal Design for Learning) and explain how integrating both frameworks supports all students.
- Relate and integrate the subject matter with other disciplines and life experiences.
- Deepen and enrich students’ understanding through content area literacy strategies, verbalization of thought, and application of the subject.
- Apply varied instructional strategies and resources, including appropriate technology, to provide comprehensible instruction, and to teach student understanding.

the correct answer from the choices provided.
The summative must meet 80% of the established criteria.
