Description

Explore the learning challenges experienced by students with dyslexia and other reading disorders. Use relevant assessment data to design and implement explicit, systematic, and sequential reading instruction including multisensory intervention strategies that are based on student needs in each of the reading components.

This course meets Florida's professional learning requirements for SB 1108 - Students with Disabilities (SWD) and partially meets HB 7069 (reading instruction). This course is available for active and retired employees of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and MDCPS Charter Schools.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the characteristics of dyslexia and other reading disorders.
  • Recognize the effect instruction has on brain development.
  • Understand the importance of early detection of reading difficulties.
  • Develop explicit, systematic, and sequential reading instruction.
  • Recognize the significance of phonological awareness in learning to read.
  • Recognize universal screeners, diagnostic, and progress monitoring assessments.
  • Explain how MTSS is used to provide appropriate instruction and intervention to struggling readers.
  • Understand how word-level reading and language comprehension impact reading comprehension.
  • Recognize the characteristics of Structured Literacy instruction.
  • Recognize the word-reading (decoding) elements of Structured Literacy instruction including phonology, sound-symbol associations, and syllable structures.
  • Implement multisensory intervention strategies to support reading development.
  • Recognize the language comprehension elements of Structured Literacy instruction—morphology, semantics, and syntax.
  • Utilize assessment data to design appropriate intervention for struggling readers.

Documentation Methods

Participants must document their learning by completing the following summatives.

2 Multiple Choice Exams - Learner demonstrates knowledge of content by selecting the correct answer from the choices provided.
3 Reflections - Learner synthesizes previous knowledge and course content in order to develop a narrative response.

The summatives must meet 80% of the established criteria.
